Welcome to "Lint Mill One Day" Artists' Workshop 2007.

To anyone with an interest in painting and drawing, we invite you to spend a day in the company of others within the comfort of Lint Mill, near Stenton, East Lothian, where the insights of all comers are accepted – in practice beginners and high performers work sociably side-by-side.

The One Day Workshop will consist of group tutorials as well as one-to-one                                                          tuition, within the Mill, by our professional artist and teacher, Philip Hutton,                                                   giving opportunity for growth, development, discussion and fulfilment… Philip                                            Hutton graduated in Drawing and Painting at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen in 1972                                  and has painted continually since then. He calls his approach 'elitist-democratic', concerned with quality and rarity and the possibility of giving everyone, especially those who come late and tentatively into painting, a slice of the action. The whole-day affair is for individuals who wish perceptive teaching within the context of European mainstream art. They may be beginners, amateurs, developed painters or, perhaps, artists from other media.

The Workshops

Each will be based around one of the following in rotation:

Winter / Summer Landscape       March; June
Still life       April; July
Theories of Composition       May; August
Painting the Nude       September

Seasons Landscape ~ either from the window, the garden or beyond, the bones of the land are eloquent. With inspiration from artists such as John Nash, Edward Bawden, Eric Ravillious, we can work from the sources of our positive feelings about the landscape. There will be an emphasis on drawing as a foundation for painting.
Still Life ~ can be either a purely painterly exercise in relationships, whose successful outcome gives a glow of intellectual as well as visual satisfaction. Or it can be an evocation of pleasures channelled through the associations of fine or rich objects. Still life can also shade into the interesting interior that Lint Mill offers.
Theories of Composition ~ and their practical outcome. The tricks, rules, formulae psychological or perceptual facts, arguable generalisations or analogies, which crystallize an inspiration. This is a workshop for those who challenge the easy, cheerful inconsequentiality of some amateur and professional painting. Get hold of the key! It may turn a lock!
